VOB to MP4 converter
Home DVDs and camcorder discs store video as VOB files that phones, TVs and editors rarely open.
What happens to your VOB
MPEG-2 video is re-encoded to H.264 and AC-3/MP2 audio to AAC, usually giving a file several times smaller at similar quality.
Tip: A DVD title is split into VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB and so on. Convert each, then join them with the merge tool. Tick Deinterlace for smoother motion.
How to convert VOB to MP4
- Drop your VOB file on the box above, or tap it to pick one. The engine (about 31 MB) loads once per visit.
- The converter reads the file's streams and shows which codecs are inside.
- Keep the defaults, or pick a quality and resolution.
- Press the button, wait for the progress bar, then download your MP4.
Prefer the command line?
This is the FFmpeg command the converter runs for a typical VOB (mpeg2video + ac3). Paste it into a terminal with FFmpeg installed for batch jobs or files too big for a browser tab:
ffmpeg -y -i input.vob -map 0:v:0 -map "0:a:0?" -sn -dn -vf "scale=trunc(iw/2)*2:trunc(ih/2)*2" -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -crf 23 -pix_fmt yuv420p -movflags +faststart -c:a aac -b:a 160k output.mp4This re-encodes, so expect it to take a while on long files. Your own file may contain different codecs; the converter above detects them and adapts. For other jobs, ask the FFmpeg command helper.
Questions
Can I convert a commercial DVD?
No. Commercial DVDs are CSS-encrypted, and the converter only reads unencrypted VOB files such as home recordings.
Which VOB file is the movie?
Usually the largest set, e.g. VTS_01_1.VOB onward. Small VOBs are menus.
Is my VOB file uploaded?
No. The VOB is read from your device by FFmpeg running as WebAssembly in the page, and the MP4 is written back to your device. No server ever receives it.
Is there a size limit for VOB to MP4?
We set none. The practical limit is browser memory: roughly 2 GB of output on a computer, and much less on phones.
