Video to GIF converter

Make a looping GIF from any clip: MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV. Choose the moment, the width and the frame rate, and get a GIF with a palette built for that clip.

Why GIFs get so big

GIF dates from 1987 and was built for still images. Move the sliders to see how width, frame rate and length multiply together, and how the same clip compares as an MP4.

Rough estimates (16:9 frame). A GIF stores every frame as a full picture of palette indexes, squeezed only by LZW. MP4 stores mostly the differences between frames. Double the width and the GIF grows about 4×; double the frame rate and it grows 2×.

How the GIF is made

Most quick converters use a generic 256-colour palette, which makes skin blotchy and gradients banded. We run two passes with FFmpeg's palettegen and paletteuse filters: the first scans your clip and picks the 256 colours it actually needs, and the second maps every frame onto that palette with ordered (Bayer) dithering, which also compresses better than random noise.

Frames are sampled at your frame rate and scaled with a Lanczos filter, and the GIF is set to loop forever.

For clips from other formats, see MOV to GIF, WebM to GIF or MP4 to GIF.

Questions

How do I make a GIF smaller?

Lower the width first (it counts twice, since height scales with it), then the frame rate, then the length. 480 px at 12 fps for 5 seconds is a good chat-friendly default.

Why does my GIF look grainy?

GIF allows only 256 colours per frame. We build a palette tailored to your clip and dither the rest, which shows as fine grain on gradients such as skies or skin.

Can I convert a GIF back to video?

Yes. Use GIF to MP4, which is usually 5 to 10 times smaller and accepted by Instagram, TikTok and ad platforms.

Is the video uploaded?

No. The GIF is made by FFmpeg running inside your browser tab.
