What happens to your MP4

Audio is decoded to 16-bit PCM at the original sample rate. Nothing is compressed, so the file is large but loses nothing further.

Tip: WAV uses about 10 MB per stereo minute at 44.1 kHz, so an hour-long video gives a ~600 MB file.

Questions

Does WAV improve quality?

No. It stores the decoded audio exactly; it cannot restore detail the original AAC removed.

Is my MP4 file uploaded?

No. The MP4 is read from your device by FFmpeg running as WebAssembly in the page, and the WAV is written back to your device. No server ever receives it.

Is there a size limit for MP4 to WAV?

We set none. The practical limit is browser memory: roughly 2 GB of output on a computer, and much less on phones.
