What happens to your MP4

Video is encoded to MPEG-4 Part 2 (the codec behind Xvid/DivX) and audio to MP3, the pairing legacy players expect.

Tip: If a player still refuses the file, lower the resolution to 720 wide or less in the options: many old players cap AVI at SD sizes.

Is AVI higher quality?

No. AVI is older and its typical codecs are less efficient than H.264, so files get bigger for the same quality.

Is my MP4 file uploaded?

No. The MP4 is read from your device by FFmpeg running as WebAssembly in the page, and the AVI is written back to your device. No server ever receives it.

Is there a size limit for MP4 to AVI?

We set none. The practical limit is browser memory: roughly 2 GB of output on a computer, and much less on phones.
